And here is where dating and relationships are also one of the matters in Islam. However, they are always considered as a sinful deed generally by every Muslim, and on top of it ignorant people label “choosing your life - partner” haram as well. But have you ever thought about what the Quran really says over “choosing your spouse”? Is knowing your potential spouse or Dating someone is halal in Islam? If dating is halal, then what are the rules that one should follow while dating or having a halal relationship? What is the best way to Nikah? Keep on reading to get your answers and gain your knowledge.

“Seek beneficial knowledge, because seeking it for the sake of Allah is a worship”. In one of the ayahs of Quran, it is mentioned: “And of His Signs is that He has created mates for you from your own kind that you may find peace in them and He has set between you love and mercy. Surely there are Signs in this for those who reflect” (30:21 Ar-Rum). Islam is the only religion which gives immense importance to marriage, it is also said that marriage completes one Muslim's deen.

In case of marrying someone you like or love, Islam gives complete rights towards marrying the one you have admiration, attraction and affection for and it is not wrong at all Islamically! It is not haram (forbidden) to like/ love or have feelings for someone before marriage, your feelings are valid with the intention of marrying them.

The phase where those intimate moments in which you get to know each other before marriage takes place, which is popularly known as “dating” is actually termed as “Taaruf” in Islam. Officially, it is the “getting to know each other part” before marriage and it is halal as well in Islam. So by “dating in Islam” or the “halal relationship” we meant the formal procedures of meeting, getting to know each other well with the intention of marrying the other one which ultimately leads to getting married is the perfect definition of halal relationship. But keep this in mind that the friendly moments should be practiced after an official wedding/nikah.

Therefore, it is haram to practice such things in Islam.

  • Make sure you and your potential partner both are thinking about each other on the basis of long term while talking and bonding. Since the bio-data on their profile of a dating app can only give a glance of what kind of a person they are, you can only really know them by meeting up in real life. Talk to them regarding children, career goals, household chores and find out how compatible you both are.

  • Involvement of your families during your halal date is very important. This not only signals that you are serious about the other person but it also shows that you respect them and your family as well. Not only this will create a sense of trust between you and your family but also between you and your potential “future” companion.

  • Speak openly about your relationship in front of your parents and relatives. Because it is considered to be in line with Islamic values. So try to share the qualities of the amazing person that you are getting to know and create a good impression among them.

  • Your dates should take place in public places. It is essential that you choose a public place that not only protects both your personality and purity but will also eliminate all the temptations that you may get if you are alone with them.
